Sargodha Child Murder Case

• Muntaha Zahra, 7 years old, went missing in Sargodha and was found dead in the upper room of a shop. Police said she was sexually assaulted and killed.
• Police arrested four suspects on 23 June and named Muhammad Arslan as the prime suspect. A court sent the suspects for six days of police questioning.
• On the night of 24 June, police said Arslan was shot dead by his own accomplices during a weapons-recovery operation. A police spokesman said: "his accomplices opened fire on him, killing him on the spot."
• The suspect's death before trial set off a public debate about whether this was a genuine shootout or a staged "encounter", a term Pakistanis use for a suspect killed in police custody.

Everyone agrees on the horror: a small child was raped and murdered, and the main suspect is now dead. The dispute is over that death. Was it a real shootout, or an "encounter" staged to bury an embarrassing case. The suspicious reading is the loudest by far, with the most-shared posts asking why the suspect got "a very easy end" rather than a trial, while the police account is repeated without anyone in authority answering the doubt. Quietest of all is the demand that would actually change something: not a faster killing of the accused, but the prevention, investigation and prosecution that keep children safe in the first place. A dead suspect ends one case. It does not fix the system that produced it.
